TECHNICAL DESIGN

This page shows the techniques I have experimented with and the skills I have acquired during this documentary process.

RAW Processing

The images that I captured for my photo essay were RAW images that were edited and then saved as a JPEG file to keep them of  high quality.

Using RAW editing you can change the white balance, Noise and use gamma correction and many other processes in order to edit the image without taking away its quality.

This has helped me develop my level of understand when editing images which can be seen in some of the promotional material I have created. I have developed this further through experimenting in Photoshop with layers and other aspects in order to create successful promotions.

CANON 550D

Experimenting with depth of field in RAW editing

I captured this image using the Canon 550D. I wanted to experiment with depth of field and a different ISO setting. I edited it as a RAW image, where i changed the white balance to get rid of the orange tint it had in the original image above.

       Experimenting with shutter speed

 ISO 400

I like the effect that using a slower shutter speed has created. Using ISO 400 allowed me to capture movement with a soft edge to it. I would like to experiment further with this setting. I edited the White balance on RAW edit to give the image its true colour and to avoid the orange tint that the image on the left has.

 ISO 6400

This image was captured in order to see the effect that using such a high shutter speed would create. It has frozen the image, so all the detail is visible with the centre of the image being the main focus. Again I edited the white balance using RAW.

PHOTOSHOP: Poster Development

 FINAL POSTER

FINAL FLYER

This is one of the final supporting material products that our group is going to use to advertise and promote our documentary on greyhounds.

I created this using Photoshop and images sourced from gettyimages.com.

I used several layers within Photoshop to create the black and white effect, but kept one layer in colour and then cut it out and enhanced the saturation and contrast in order to make the red coat stand out against the background.

I came up with a strap line 'Life behind the money, muzzles and media' which gives the audience the idea that they are getting an inside view of what REALLY goes on behind the scenes. I also threw in a rhetorical question to get the audience to think actively rather than passively. It also breaks the 4th wall as it directly communicates to them.

Overall, I think this poster is a good piece of material that will work well to promote our documentary next year.

To create this flyer, I sourced a more controversial image from Getty images, and added a statistic that I found when researching online about greyhounds. I feel that by using statistics, the audience are more likely to engage with the fact that greyhound racing is a problem for some unlucky dogs.

I have desaturated the image to make it duller and to sit nicely next to the rhetorical question that asks the audience if they want to contribute to this animal cruelty by placing a bet. Again this breaks the 4th wall.
