New Media Application

Advertising is one of the key aspects in media these days. The society are manipulated over and over through the use of advertising.
Here are some forms of promotion we will be using for our production company, and
as I am in charge of the marketing department I have produced some promotional material to support our documentary for the film festival. This is located at the bottom of this page

Social Networking sites are a great way to advertise, as people can share links, upload comments and generally become more aware of a certain product, company or other form of media.

Facebook: We have set up our own Facebook site in order to gain interest from a wider target audience.

Twitter: We have also set up a Twitter account to create further hype for our documentary.

Forums: We have recently joined a Greyhound racing forum, where we posted a message about our documentary and gained a primary source from a Greyhound rehabilitation centre. This has been a great success.

WIX: Our production company have created a Wix account for our documentary.

Blogs: These are a great way to track progress, and to update our target audience. We currently have a blog running on Tumblr.

The BBC

The BBC is the largest broadcasting organisation in the world. It creates programmes that inform, educate and entertain the general public. It is a public service broadcaster, stablished by a royal charter and funded by the license fee that is paid by UK households.

It has:

8 national TV channels plus regional programming

10 national radio stations

40 local radio stations

An extensive website.

These are all used in conjunction with advertising for the interest of the general public. They use viral adverts, TV adverts, Websites as advertising and they have also set up social networking sites about their organisation.

'The BBC is not permitted to carry advertising or sponsorship on its public services. This keeps them independent of commercial interests and ensures that they can be run instead to serve the general public interest.'  Sourced: http://www.bbc.co.uk/aboutthebbc/policies/advertising.shtml

The social networking site is a technique that our own production company have used to advertise, as well as our plan to get advertising done through a radio station although not our own.

The BBC runs several TV channels that are there to inform: BBC 1 News Educate: CBBC for Children and Entertain: BBC 3 i.e Newly Weds.

CHANNEL 4

Channel 4 is a british public service television broadcaster. It is largely commercially self funded through the use of advertising slots on the channel. It is ultimately publicly owned and operated by channel four television corporation (public body established in 1990).

The channel was established to provide a fourth television service to the United Kingdom in addition to the television license funded BBC's two services and the single commercial broadcasting network, ITV

If you look at my Documentary History and Styles page you will see I have analysed Dispatches Channel 4 programme.

Channel 4 also uses social networking sites to advertise:

PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL I HAVE CREATED FOR OUR PRODUCTION COMPANY

Logo

Our original ideas all revolved around controversial issues, which gave me an idea of the term 'silver lining.'

This is defined as 'A poetic sentiment that even the gloomiest outlook contains some hopeful or consoling aspect. Cf. [1634 Milton Comus I. 93]

It relates to the sun behind clouds, so I decided to edit an image on Photoshop to produce the effect of a break in a cloud and by using the lens flare tool I created the illusion of the sun.

I reduced the opacity of the image behind and used a professional looking style of font on top to make our company seem more professional

Business Card

I have created this business cards, as means of further promotion towards our documentary. It links in with our theme from our logo that I also designed, which gives our production company a professional look.

POSTER

FINAL A3 POSTER

FLYER

A4 POSTER

T SHIRT

Using photoshop, I took the theme of our greyhound documentary and transferred it to a poster. The occurring theme that will be used in our documentary is the rescue centres and the abuse that some grey hounds face in the business.

I wanted to use a rhetorical question to involve the audience into thinking about what their opinion would be after having watched our documentary. I chose to use a hand writing style of text to make it look more informal and to give the appearance that the viewer will be getting behind the scene information which appeals to audiences who enjoy observational mode documentaries. This relates back to Bill Nichols book where he describes a documentary film maker as a representative of the public, asking questions that the viewers want to know but cant ask themselves.

I chose dull colours to represent the darker side of greyhound racing, along with a interesting texture to make the lettering stand out.

The silhouette of the greyhound behind the cage was an idea I wanted to experiment with to make the audience empathise with the animals and make it look a bit controversial to interest our audience into watching the film.

For the final poster, I wanted to show Greyhound racing in a less controversial and more balanced way. I did this through using a positive image of a grey hound which i sourced from getty images.

I layered the images on Photoshop in order to turn the image black and white. However, I have kept the red coat in colour, in order to focus on the fact that this documentary is going to be about Greyhound racing.

I like how it stands out against the textured background.

This flyer will be handed out during the presentation in order to stimulate the audience with the use of statistics (15,000 greyhounds).

It was inspired by the propoganda posters I researched about.

A rhetorical question asking if they would contribute to this number by placing a bet, forces the audience to think about the issue that we will be investigating.

It is a controversial message, against a controversial image (Sourced: Getty Images). It shows that the documentary will explore the other side to greyhound racing, behind the gambling.

It suggests that these animals are often used as tools to make money and when they're no good to their owners they are disposed of.

Here is an A4 poster using a more upbeat image of the dog with a towel round its neck. This isn't the final supporting material, but it was an idea I played about with on Photoshop to put more of a positive/comedic value into greyhound racing. image sourced: Getty images

I have created T Shirts for our production company in order to look professional when we go to film. I did this by using iron on paper and printing our logo on the back.
