Initial ideas

Initial idea one:

My first initial idea was researching into whether cancer treatment for terminally ill cancer patients was money well spent or the NHS's lost? This would include interviews from patients, family members and doctors. When creating this idea I aimed at choosing to use a observational and expository mode. As I was aiming to use observational by observing without interference patients/doctors/family members and the expository as i was aiming to use the voice of god within certain parts of the documentary.

As this is a fairly new controversial subject that is being encountered recently due to the recession there are very few documentaries that document on this subject. There could be many reasons as to why as the main being the issue of ethics towards the family and the patient. However using online information I found this to be very topical as everyone had a different opinion on the matter either being for or against. An example of this is within the channel four website within the article ‘cancer treatment: cost versus benefit’

This article uses an objective narrative to narrate the issues that are being said to face treatment for cancer patients. However although this idea was one of our first initial ideas that we chose to use we had trouble gaining a hospital that would accept us to film there. However this was expected but understood as there were clear ethical issues.

Initial idea two:

My second idea was to follow the lives of a circus during a short period of time. It would include following the acts both on stage and behind the scenes. This as i would want to manipulate the audience would like to use the participatory mode by the manipulation of the interviews.

This issue has been around for many years however I was hoping to create a twist for circus animals as I was aiming with this idea to create a documentary that was supporting animals being treated correctly within circus’s. However when researching this idea I found that the majority of work that has been done against was for the opposing argument. An example of this is a viral documentary that is used within the modern society to give out information or views that I discovered that represented this arguement.

Initial idea three:

Was to follow the life of a prison guard in which there would be interviews with both prisoners and prison guards. However due to the complexity of this idea i was aiming to only use youth offending prisons. I would aim to use the observational mode with the participatory mode as I would have liked to have conducted interviews to create an understanding of the issues that they face being either the prisoner or the guard. I gained my influences from Ross kemps documentary series on gangs. In which he follows gangs around the world observe how they live and why gangs are becoming worse. This influenced me as I was curious as to how these gang members were controlled.
