Documentary process

Documentaries have been around for many years and although the technology was very different they did however aspire to portray an event or subject realistically and truthfully to the audience. The definition of documentary could be argued to start from the Robert Flaherty's film Nanook however today the definition of documentary is a lot more defined and fixed .Clearly shown in the Oxford Dictionary definition of documentary in which it describes documentary as;a film or television or radio programme that provides a factual report on a particular subject.' Now documentary is one of the top three filming genres that are available to the public . click here for more history on Documentary.

Practitioners of documentary

Nick Broomfield

Nick broomfield a participatory documentary practitioner has created some of the most inspiring documentaries that are to date.He produced classics such as, Aileen:The life and death of a serial killer in which  he filmed with his childhood sweetheart Joan Churchill. Nick Broomfield first became interested in photography at the age of 15 in which it was this love for holography that eventually captured his attention to documentary.Although he studied in law in cardiff and Political science at essex university, it was The national film school in which he studied at met many of his inspirations, one of these being his lecturer Colin Young. His main influence on other practitioners were the observational works of ; Fred Wiseman,Robert Leacock and Pennebaker. Now to date Broomfield has won over 7 awards for his work which are the Sudance first prize,British academy award,Prix Italia ,Dupont Award, Greirson Award,Hague Peace Prize and finally the Amnesty international Dean Award.

Although he has inspiration from observational work he does state however that he only uses himself within his film to show the audience that it the documentary is his subject view of the argument.Which is clearly shown through his interviews within his documentaries as he becomes dominant and clearly gains the answers what he wants by the questions he chooses.

Nick broomfield is clearly known for his presence within his documentary as he uses the cinema virite in becoming the primary. By doing this not only does he become known to the audience but also makes the subjects feel more ease.Another in which Nick Broomfield is very subjective view of his documentaries as he easily manipulates subjects into getting what he wants but also he uses his manipulation to create the argument that he desires. This is clearly shown in the Biggie and Tupac documentary in the interviews in which he interrupts without the subjects subconsciously knowing to ask direct questions that cause the subject to be in shock.

Louis Theroux

Louis Theroux Was born in Singapore in 1970 and came from a successful family as he was the spouse of the famous traveller and writer Paul Theroux and has a cousin that is a successful actor and Brother that is a writer and television presenter. This success rubbed major-ally onto Theroux as shown with his talent within documentary.Alike to Nick broomfield louis Theroux also chooses to shoot his documentary by using the participatory mode as he also uses cinema verite to present his films. He is mainly known for his work of documentaries within the BBC.

It has been said that Louis Theroux is well know for putting people on the spot when asking questions within interviews and is well known for his shocking documentary focal points.

Aileen Wuornus:The selling of a serial killer

Within this documentary broomfield identifies the money scandal behind the first serial killer Aileen Wuornos. He identifies that interviews towards the criminal are sold for over 20 thousand. This is just one of the main scandals that are faced with the awaiting death penalty of Aileen Wuornos.

This is a reflexive participatory Documentary in which cinema virite is used.Although cinema virite is used nick Broomfield is restricted into what environment he is able to film within. However this works perfectly with the film as it gives the audience a sense of restriction. The camera shots that are used with the hand held camera highlights just how insane Aileen Wuornos actually is.However within some scenes the audience to start to putty her for a brief moment as she clearly says directly to Broomfield that they don't care about her she is just simply a selling product.

He is well known for is simplistic opinions that manipulate the subjects which is clearly shown within his works of 'The most hated family'.In which he observed the family for a number of weeks and followed them on their day to day routines.in which he resulted into capturing some shocking footage of protests with verbal abuse.Although Louis Theroux cores not get involved within his documentaries he clearly although pretends to have no knowledge is very intelligent on the subject that he is being mindless off.

 Miami mega jail

This is the over look on Miami mega Jail and the live of the prisoners and prison guards. He uses Informal interviews which portray decisive moments as many confrontations are made through the prisoners. This film is very cinema verite as the camera never turns off portraying truth.

Micheal Mann

Michael Mann born 5th January 1943 in Chicago, was raised into a working class family. He became a well educated individual receiving a degree in English literature and having a masters in film in which he received from London’s international film school. His talents are broadly reconisgsed internationally in which his work is stated to be “..a Mann film can be imagined as a combination of Antonioni’s art sensibility, Kubrick’s meticulous construction, and Herzog’s Method recreation of reality applied to Sam Fuller material.” (SensesOfCinema,2011).His passion for film is clearly shown through quotes within articles such as the following found from IBDM where he states that "A 65-ft.-wide screen and 500 people reacting to the movie, there is nothing like that experience."

He was well known for his dramatic coloured sceenes, deco building and the representation of gangsters being seen with a positive view. This is seen in his 1981 film violent streets.
