Lecture Review

         By Ainsley Brooks

Week One:

• Introduction to the module and assessments explained
• We watched two Documentaries from previous students to give us an idea of what is expected.
• After the lecture, I joined a group and we discussed some ideas we had for the Documentary.

Week Two:

• This week we looked at Documentary photojournalism, here are some notes I made during the class.

Modes:
The Observational mode – natural (not looking into the camera)
Reflexive  – using everyday situations to contrast symbolic social comments, interacting with the subject.
Participatory  – the filmmaker is taking part in the events
Expository
Performative
Political Reflexivity
Poetic

We looked at the following Photographers:
Jacob Riis
Lewis Hine – he says “Ethical ideals of people not products showing capitalism under belly”
Cornell Capa – the form of engagement. What were they doing before, middle and after? Which is 3 forms of capturing a documentary.
Dorothea Lange

Tips about analysing photos:
Talk about the history of the photo, the mode, what it is trying to show or represent, the issues, political and so on.
Photos are used to change someone’s option, for example showing someone poor is used to show the upper class what society is like which links to power, money, jobs and welfare.

“Technology defines documentary”

Week Three:

• No lecture this week - instead we created our group website and started to work on the    style and our i
ndividual pages.
• We created a Twitter page and met up again to ring hospitals for filming permission.
• I began to think about what I could do for my photo essay, considering the Rowner project which was one of my ideas for the actual Documentary

Week Four:

• Workshop training on using a Canon 450D
• I came up with ideas on what to do for my photo essay project and created some release forms.

Week Five:

• Final cut pro re-cap.
• We was given selected clips and sound clips, our task was to create a short promo for "Sea World"
• The class was also taught some short cuts, colour correction, creating and adding logos for a title and audio levels.

Week Six:

• Advanced Photoshop training on Raw processing.
• We looked at a number of effects, adding copyright to our images and reducing the file size for our Flickr account.
• After, we briefly looked at Adobe Bridge CS5 creating templates for all our saved images. We did this by going to Tools - Create metadata template.
• After the lesson I created a Flickr account.

Week Seven:

• Final Cut Pro workshop - looking at editing 2 clips together using 'muliclip' function, after this we played with the audio levels and added   titles to the piece.

• We looked at Green Screen - removing the green colour behind the two people talking and adding a background behind them.

Week Eight:

• Was given more information on the presentation and what is required from us. After we watched a Documetary called "Parellel Lines" by the BBC

Week Nine:

• Looked at the differing styles of Nick Broomfield and watched his Documentary on "Biggie and Tupac". Looking at how he always had his camera on to capture everything and not miss a thing.
