Initial ideas

Rowner Project:

My first initial idea was to focus on a community in Rowner located in Gosport.

Rowner was once named the worst estate in the country due to the lack of jobs, drug problems, state of repair buildings and so on.

I wanted to focus on what life was like living there, the anti-social behaviour problems, the fact that most of the corner shops have closed down and how they travel to the nearest shops which is 4 miles away.

I also wanted to ask them about how they feel about the current project to make Rowner a better place to live.

I was also going to follow Ellen, a resident who has lived there since the 70's, how she manages with every day life including climbing stairs to her flat on the 9th floor, because the lift has been out of action for years.

Unfortunately, we decided to vote against this idea because there has been lots of documentaries similar to this.

The mode for this would have been reflexive to make a social comment and to show a life in 'slums' happening here in the UK.

There has been 'bad press' and reports on Rowner, but no one has ever stepped foot into Rowner to make a documentary to show what life is really like behind the stories.

The dangers of meeting someone online:

My second idea was about the use of chat rooms and dating sites. I was going to look at the dangers of it and how people aren't always who they say they are.

I was going to interview and follow two people who use these sites and ask them why they use them and the people they have met in the past. I was also going to follow them on one of their dates and ask them after how it went.

I decided to vote against this because I felt the idea wasn't strong enough and that the person on the other site of the net probably wouldn't want to be filmed.

This idea didn't generate many themes, the main ones I did come up with shows 'reality', 'sex', and 'love'.

Greyhound Racing:

Our main documentary idea would look into Greyhound dog racing, this is considered a sport and is often overlooked by people going to the races, betting, etc they don’t usually  know what really happens backstage to train these dogs so they can take part in such a sport.

We would look at both sides and interview people from different charities and organisations including the RSPCA, adoption and rescue centres. By following and interviewing the greyhound owners this will also enable us to get both sides of the argument across to the viewers, which will hopefully divide or change their opinion on how they feel about Greyhound dog racing.

This is the idea we decided as a group to go for because it hasn't been done before and has alot of potential.

It would generate themes such as 'greed', 'obession', 'gambling', etc looking at both the 'fun' side of going to a race to what happens behind the scenes and years later once the greyhound is too old to race.
