Man v Nature ANALYSIS When deciding what images to capture I thought back to some of the research I undertook on Documentary and Photojournalism. William Eggleston's photographs inspired me to look more closely at certain objects such as litter and signs, whereas Henri-Cartier Bresson influenced me to experiment with shadow and reflection (light/dark). I captured a range of Photographs using the Canon 450D experimenting with different Iso settings to achieve the Images that I wanted. The location that they were captured in is Clatford in Andover. I chose this location, because there is plenty of countryside but at the same time its a very short distance to the main town in Andover. I wanted to use the idea of Man V Nature by capturing scenic images but with a harsh object that disrupts the Photograph. I also wanted to experiment using colour from the objects and enhancing it in RAW editing. After looking at the work of Eggleston, I wanted to experiment with colour to represent what is going on in the images. I also loved Bresson's eye for detail and wanted to show this in my own work. The first image was something I took because I liked the bridge, and wanted to experiment with capturing reflection yet with a concrete surrounding like the dual carriage way. I increased the contrast and cropped it slightly to focus the attention on the reflection. Rather setting up these images I wanted to capture them as they are, using the decisive moment like Bresson. The 2nd image I captured is an example of how I experimented with the iso to capture the contrast between shadows and light. I used iso 400 which would usually be used in day light, but as I was in a dark area I still kept that setting and I love the effect that it has given. I haven't edited this image as I didn't want to change the way it looked. I wanted to experiment with more colour, so images 3, 4, 5 and 7 is what I captured. Out of these four, I think that my favourite is probably image 5, as I like the contrast between the dull underpass and the texture that is captured. I like how the tree sort of represents the 'light at the end of the tunnel' as I increased the yellow and orange saturation in that area of the Photo in order to create a bigger contrast between the dark and light. I also like the reflection of the wet area as it shows the reflection of the sky. Image 6 is a piece of graffiti that I found very interesting, as it was very Banksy style. I increased the saturation of the green and increased the contrast in order to make the image much sharper. It again related to Egglestons images as this is what 'man' has created and left behind. Although I feel this is more of an art than graffiti. Image 8 shows the use of framing within a photograph, as i used the edges of the trees to focus your attention to the van. Again this relates back to the man V nature story I wanted to tell in my photos and I think it works quite well. I decreased the blue of the sky to make it look duller, and increased the contrast. Images 9, 10, 11 and 12 were inspired by Egglestons style through the use of litter as the main objects, but also Bresson through the use of reflection and light and dark. To focus on the stella can in 9 I increased the red saturation and the contrast of the whole image to 60+ to create a crisper feel to the image. Images 10 and 11 are probably my favourite out of all the photographs I took, because firstly they came out so well to begin with that I didn't really want to change them in RAW, however in image 11 I increased the stauration of the blue bottle to+32 and the black to +12 to enhance the reflections. I also increased the contrast to +63. Image 11 was one that didn't really need editing as when I did it damaged the effect that I wanted which was to show the light reflecting through the glass bottle, but also the silhouette of the trees. I feel this blends both the techniques from Eggleston and Bresson's work together nicely but in my own style. Finally, image 12 is a great example of using shallow depth of field between the camera and the bottle, which in turn makes the background out of focus so that all the attention is focused on the subject being the bottle. I increased the contrast to +76 and decreased the saturation by -34 to make the image look colder. I then increased the grain by +4 to add a rustic effect then increased the green saturation and decreased the aqua to enhance the colour of the bottle. I feel this worked quite well as it shows good contrast and allowed me to experiment with Depth of Field. Overall, I am pleased with the final 12 Photographs, and this has helped me to experiment using my eye to capture detail then transfer it on to digital media. I can transfer these skills for when I create marketing such as trailers for our Documentary. |
