Images have been around for many years now and have been known to capture and tell stories of history without any words.To define photojournalism according to the oxford dictionaries is defined as;
Who captured the first photograph?
Joseph Nicephore Niepce (1765-1833) was the first individual to ever capture a an image on film. He was a french inventor of the 1800's that as well as capturing the first ever image also tried to narrow the waiting time for obtaining an image to 8 hours calling this the process of Physautotype. This process was the process in which lavender oil was added to alcohol onto a silver plate for several hours used a photographic agent,finally applying to the camera obsecrura to produce an image. Unfortunately when Niepce died he died without recognition for his work as his work was not acknowledged.
![]() | Although his picture is hard to identify it contains a building on the left, a tree left to centre and a barn in the middle.Although it has little context it is known that in order for this image to be taken the exposure lasted 8 hours meaning that there would have been direct sunlight on both sides of the buildings as the sun travelled from East to West. |
Who was the first photojournalist?
The first photojournalist is arguably Erich Salomon who used the basic technology of the 1900's to produce the very first photojournalist.(Freeman,J,2008).Salomon originally worked for the Illustrated Press.However when his proposal to take pictures of desisive moments of statesman he was refused.His focus was on european statesman discussing business of global importance,(Davenport,A,1991).Within this book it is also quoted that Salomon stated that he had official methods to gain his photos without the knowledge of the focused individual or group.These were "First,arrive late,second,dress well.Third speak in unintelligible tongue,if they cant understand you,they assume that you belong there."However although these methods sometimes worked they sometimes did not which created the photojournalism technique pf acting'catlike' around a building taking pictures from through window or gaps between curtains.
